Separating the real news from the fake news can be a tough job, so why not let your search engine do it for you? Google is following the example set by Facebook at the time of the US election, waging war on fake news sites by integrating a fact checker into their search bar.
When a user types a phrase into Google, a truth scale below the bar alerts them as to how accurate the information is, and includes links to the sources used to prove that conclusion. This way, people are less likely to misinform others about social, political, and economic events.
Google didn’t do it all on its own, however. Several legitimate, well-respected fact checking sites came to its aid in setting up the useful feature. Other sources that have proved to be truthful can also become fact verifiers if they choose to apply, though Google won’t pay for their services.
While Google is not the company executing the fact verification, its neutral attitude towards each false piece of information allows readers to draw their own conclusions with minimal bias. In the long run, this new feature is sure to help everyone base their opinions in factual information.
